Chapter 10

THE KISSING WAS LIKE a drug, his tongue in her mouth doing things that sent sparks all over her skin.

He kissed her cheek, almost fondly, almost affectionately, as if this were not only a fun way to pass the time on a long flight. As if it meant something between them, this naughty playful coupling on an airplane seat. And she caught herself believing it, believing she had a husband who actually liked her, who was attracted to her and ready to have some fun together. So it was that her brain shut her down. Chloe turned her face away from him, took his wrist and guided his hand away from her. She sat up, face flushed and sweaty, and couldn’t look at him.

“I’m not trying to be a tease. I just don’t want to have sex.”

“You could have fooled me. Why’d you say yes?”

“Because part of me wants to but my brain is like, no. Nope. No sex with him. It confuses me. I get all attached and crap, and we don’t want that kind of complication. This is a straightforward business arrangement. Clearly, wine and chocolate are not my good judgment foods. I shouldn’t have started that.”

“You didn’t start it,” he said grudgingly. “You just fell asleep and I decided to get closer. You looked so comfortable once the blanket was over you I couldn’t resist joining you. If I’d kept my hands to myself, I wouldn’t be so uncomfortable right now. This is annoying.”

“The squeaky sound I made, or me stopping the foreplay?”

“Stopping. You haven’t made any sounds I didn’t like.”

“Good to know. I think I’ll get out my laptop and write about this plane. My readers love wealth—not what it sounds like, just detailed descriptions of lavish, expensive goods and travel. So this is useful research.”

“If you ever change your mind, I’d be happy to provide some other more personal research opportunities for you.”

“Sightseeing? Personal tour of Rome?”

“I was thinking a personal tour of some fine Italian linen bed sheets. In Rome or when we’re in the countryside. On a train. I’m adaptable. Just let me know.”

“I appreciate—I appreciate that you’re not giving me crap about changing my mind. A lot of guys wouldn’t be a gentleman about it, you know?”

“No, I don’t. I’ve never had to bully or coerce a woman into sex, and I don’t intend to start. It’s unmanly,” he said.

“I just...you don’t know how thankful I am that you were honorable about it and so understanding.”

“By the end of the trip, I guarantee you’ll change your mind,” he said. All at once he scooped her into his arms and held her. She caught her breath. It wasn’t a passionate embrace full of erotic promise. It was...protective. Intimate. As if he wanted to keep her safe from the world. And the even stranger thing was that she felt safe from the world right then, felt safe right down to her toes and deep in her unfortunate, stupid heart. The one that was falling for him already despite her best efforts.
